If you are considering a dermatologic procedure, you want to be sure that your physician is well qualified by training and experience to perform the procedure. Here are some questions you should ask:

  • Is the physician board-certified? Board certification in dermatology documents the highest quality of training in his or her specialty.

  • How many of the relevant procedures has the physician performed? Ask to see before-and-after photos of patients who had the procedure.

  • What outcome can be expected from the procedure? How long is the recuperation period?

  • What are the risks and side effects of the procedure?

  • Where is the procedure performed—office, outpatient facility, or hospital?

  • What is the cost of the procedure? How will payment be required? You should also find out if your health insurance will pay some or all of the cost.
